Accessible Interior Design

The Adaptable House

St James Whitting will change the way you design for people with disabilities forever. Adaptable housing starts from the basic premise that every house should be accessible to a visitor using a wheelchair without further modifications.

Universal Design

When homes are retrofitted with ramps, handrails and other devices, they can take on an institutionalised appearance. Universal design does not propose special features for assistance, but instead promotes the use of standard building products and practices to overcome access and usability problems making the home better for everyone.

Accessible Design

Is all about freedom: having the freedom to move with ease and confidence, having the freedom to access all spaces within the home, and having the freedom to gain this access independently without outside assistance.

Inclusive Design

Is a strategy that can be applied to any interior for a wider range of people.  A livable house uses building features, fittings and products in combination to increase usability, benefiting people of all ages and abilities.

We work alongside our clients, their carers and medical consultants to ensure that we provide technical advice and guidance on the key living features that make a home easier and safer to live in for people of all ages and abilities. Housing design should be useful, appealing and marketable to all potential home occupants with diverse abilities.
