A Californian Bungalow celebrates clean lines, open living and functional family entertaining
The brief from our clients was for a clean, light filled contemporary kitchen and laundry renovation that transformed the existing dark U Shape timber kitchen into a functional light heart of the home that enabled the family to enjoy the outdoor courtyard area and solve existing storage issues in the laundry and kitchen.
Family functionality was at the central core concept of the interior design, materials specification and space planning, to ensure a busy working family of five adults could have ample storage and work areas whilst maintaining a clean aesthetic. The butler’s kitchen laundry hosts the refrigerator in the return, washing machine and dryer and a custom storage unit for hiding unsightly golf clubs that is accessible from the back yard. The appliances nook was transformed into a cafe hub that features LED lighting and an extendable bench for easy access and maintenance.
All joinery was custom built by Zarrella Kitchens ensuring quality of production and longevity with Laminex Essastone unique calacatta bench tops, George Fethers. LIGNAPAL pre-finished natural timber veneers and a complete colour specification in SJW Elementals Collection coloured by Resene. Appliances were up-cycled from the previous kitchen as they were in good condition and valued by the home owners. Walls and ceilings were painted in St James Whitting Elementals Collection coloured by Resene zero-VOC paints. Economical options were selected for tiles from Kalafrana Ceramics, while not compromising on quality and style.
The external palette of the outdoor living area was integrated into the interior design scheme through the limited-edition fine art print Winton Ponds by Catherine Whitting from the St James Whitting art studio and The Curious Art Bar. Inspired by the writings of author Tim Winton, Winton Ponds is an exploration in layering and colour washes that add a freshness and zest to the interior.
” I keep asking my husband when we are going to have to leave our beautiful holiday home – then, as I look around at the beautiful interiors, I realise I am on holiday when we are at home – it is our forever home” Arti
