KITCHEN DESIGN
The most renovated room in the house has to be the kitchen. Gone are the days of this room serving only a functional purpose; it’s now a social hub for family and guests and can even be used as a home office, homework centre and well just about any other purpose where people gather to interact – they might even share a cuppa or a glass of wine at the same time!
When it comes to designing your kitchen, there’s a whole host of styles, products and materials available from flooring, joinery, door styles, benchtops, splashbacks, hardware, colours and appliances. So where do you start?

Firstly, you must consider the area you have available. You may be replacing your kitchen in the existing space or, you may be renovating and thereby creating more space. The function of your kitchen is all important: will it be the right size for your family and have everything you need to suit your cooking style. More than just looking fabulous, your kitchen needs to perform.
What’s your style? You may like the popular Hamptons style or a country look. You may want a classic ambience to suit your home’s architecture or you may love a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Then again you may be all for informality and a little boho – nothing wrong with any of those but the same rules of form follows function, must apply.
Getting it right. Look for inspiration in magazines, books and online. Once you have an idea of the style you like start putting pictures into a “look book” for yourself so you know what you are aiming for. Then, call your designer! They are the people who can help you achieve the perfect look and function of your kitchen, assist with pulling all the elements together, help with colour and material choices, design and detail every aspect to ensure you have the best layout, and help you find a quality manufacturer who can realise the job.
Investing in good design is paramount to achieving a successful outcome. Experienced designers can really make the difference between an average kitchen and a superb one.
At St James Whitting we specialise in environmentally sustainable, eco-friendly kitchens. This means we consider not only the space planning and function of your kitchen and all of the elements within, we also consider the quality, content, durability, manufacturing processes and materials that go into everything we specify to ensure the products are safe and healthy for you and your family, ethically produced and meet high standards of energy and water efficiency.
But most of all, your kitchen should nurture and be filled with love for all those who share with you a passion for family, friends and food.
