Family Entertainer with an eco edge
Built in the 1990s this family home in one of Sydney’s bayside locations, had served its residents well. However, now that the children were young adults the owners decided it was time to put their personal signature on their family residence and upgrade their home to cater for their growing family and friends in a modern and sophisticated environment that reflected who they are.
Sophisticated Sustainable Materials
Cabinets feature George Fethers natural timber veneer details. with customised internal storage solutions and soft-close drawers and doors. Hardware inside cabinets provides functional storage for recycling bins, cutlery and utensils, herbs and spices, chopping boards and baking dishes. The custom made built in dining cabinet features personalised storage for dinner ware, drinks and glassware that is easily accessible from the dining table.. Timber contrast in the joinery creates visual interest and complements the palette found in the natural marble. LED down lights provide ample illumination to display areas in the joinery.. Bench tops and island bench waterfalls feature hard-wearing Silestone by Cosentino. The owners requested to keep the existing timber floor and appliances and complement these with a new stove and hidden range hood. The microwave and small appliances are located within the built in pantry and are easily accessible with pull out full extension runners.
Family Entertainer - Design Concept
Bidding at a school auction, the homeowners secured a consultation with design firm St James Whitting to discuss ways in which the home could be modernised inside and out, including a new outdoor room and garden space.
The design team at St James Whitting worked within the existing footprint of the house, upgrading the two bathrooms, kitchen, dining and sitting rooms. The sitting and dining rooms were transposed to create more appropriate space planning and traffic flow.
The outdoor pergola was demolished, and a new outdoor room featured Out Deco decorative screens and Glosswood pre finished timber lining boards, was constructed to provide space for relaxing, cooking and dining. The garden was re-landscaped to include an L-shaped built in seating arrangement with a paved area and fire pit – the perfect addition for larger social gatherings. The former clothes line was removed and relocated to maximise the space and a new lawn was laid to add softness and comfort to the outdoors. A large, existing tree was retained to provide shade to the garden and new perimeter planting softens the surrounding fence line and adds more greenery to the space with the tranquil sounds of the water feature and up lighting to create ambiance during the evening.
The new dining room area windows were replaced with St James Whitting coloured by Resene Ebonize coloured French doors, which now lead out from the dining room to the new entertaining space. The closed-in kitchen is now open-plan, providing a family-friendly cooking, eating and entertaining space with functional storage facilities. Materials include Silestone benchtops, natural marble splashbacks, natural timber veneer joinery and stainless-steel tapware and appliances; all selected for their eco-friendly attributes including zero-VOC paints from the St James Whitting Elementals Collection coloured by Resene Paints for the interior and exterior scheme.
The existing red Jarrah floor was re-stained to allow the colour to work-in with the new scheme and maintain the existing floor. The palette throughout features the client’s choice of charcoal and white tones with warm timber accents. LED lighting features throughout the home.
The interiors were styled by the team at St James Whitting featuring a limited edition artwork Glacial Drift by Catherine Whitting, St James Whitting signature homewares La Palmera by Kate St James and custom curated products from Villeroy & Bosch and Country Road. A sustainable, inclusive interior design solution that has transformed both the home and well being of the family that live in it.
